Thanks for these great lists. It's nice to see everything so organized. I'm not sure I agree with all the worthy books but what is literature if not a constant discussion of perceived merit? This gives a lot of good recommendations for the future (no pun intended). Now, to get reading...

The movie for Children of Men is very different from the book. You will not be spoiled if you've already seen the movie. I like them both a lot, but I think I prefer the book. It's a lot more subtle, and the ending is much more ambiguous.

"House of the Scorpion" is one of those surprising young adult books because while it's clearly appropriate for kids (simple language and characters), it's got one heck of a story, enough to satisfy any adult. It's a really great book - nice to hear you enjoyed it.

I saw "Children of Men" (movie) and thought it was really interesting. Of course, I only realized it was based on a book when it got the end and acknowledged that fact... I do dislike watching movies without reading the book... hmm. I've heard from a few people, though, that the book and the movie are pretty different. I guess I'll just have to find out for myself, right?

Thanks for the article. It is great to hear different perspectives on reading short stories. I agree. I also like to immerse myself into the world that the author has created. That is often hard to accomplish in a short story.

It actually sounds kind of fun. Not all books have to be exciting to be good and this sounds like a pleasant read.
